Trends Relating To Botox

By Ariel Mernal

The public is well aware that having botox treatments is a simple and easy solution to make the skin appear younger. Its cosmetic applications have advanced significantly over the last few years, with more and more people now looking to undergo botox injections with the hope of getting rid of fine lines and wrinkles. Botox may have been considered to be a procedure that would come and go, however the skeptics now see that this is not true, it's going to be around for a while.

There are sections in newspapers and magazines and segments on television that are dedicated to celebrities that have had botox in order to make their skin look more youthful. A lot of people are wondering why this has become so increasingly mainstream in recent years.

Well, the answer is simple really. Botox is a cheap and effective solution to ageing skin. It's a fast treatment, there are no scars which can happen from plastic surgery, and it is pretty easy on the bank account. Celebrities have made botox a household name, and because of this, many more people are now choosing to undergo these treatments.

Botox for men?

Many people think that botox is only something that women are interested in, but this is not true. The truth is to the contrary. Even though the procedure is more often performed on women, men are getting botox treatments more often nowadays. There are those in the media who have coined the term 'bro-tox'. Some clinics now report that up to 50% of their patients undergoing botox are male!

Changing trends

The fact is, botox usage is going up. It is estimated that the number of men and women who underwent botox injection rose from 2010 to 2011 by around 5% - that's a rise from 5.4 million to 5.7 million people. Other statistics say that it's 10% that it has been going up, year by year. This rising trend should come as no surprise. The previously attached 'stigma' and social attitude to botox injections being the treatment reserved for the wealthy no longer exists, and neither does any sense of any shame of undergoing the procedure. This procedure has become quite mainstream and popular.

There is more than this though. Botox's applications have advanced from just cosmetic use to management of a variety of clinical conditions that cause muscle spasticity. Some of these conditions include blepharospasm, spastic paraparesis and cerebral palsy in both children and adults. There have been multiple reports of these treatments showing significant benefits for patients. Other applications include managing patients with migraine (multiple botox injections are given to the scalp) and excessive sweating.

We can all speculate with certainty that botox is only going to rise in acceptance in time. Research is ongoing into looking at newer applications, and the results so far are promising.
