Weight Loss Challenges After Pregnancy

By Trishia Serinton

Pregnancy will always cause women to gain weight, it's a natural part of the process. There is the weight of the baby itself inside of the pregnant mother, but also there is extra fat deposits in the abdominal area as well, which people sometimes call 'baby weight'. Losing this weight that has been gained following the delivery of a baby can be quite a task. It can be even more difficult if the woman was overweight prior to getting pregnant.

Here, we will be looking at some effective ways to shed weight after having a baby.

1. Keep hydrated

Drink plenty of water after pregnancy to make sure that dehydration is not an issue. Having plenty of water and other liquids will make you feel more full as well, and it may prevent over-eating. Don't over-do it though, drink only what your body craves.

2. Do not have overly strict diets

This may sound as surprising advice but trying to lose weight by following a strict diet can reduce the amount of nutrients that you passed down to your baby through breast milk. While this is not strictly proven, it must also be borne in mind that eating a healthy, nourishing diet is sufficient to allow for slow and natural weight loss rather than a rapid drop in weight. Consuming healthy foods such as plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables are excellent at keeping hunger at bay and making sure the weight comes off gradually.

3. Exercise regularly

Yes, regular exercise still works! Excess calories can be burned in many ways, including cardiovascular exercises like aerobics which will maintain muscles and bone density. Exercises can include a brisk walk, jogging, swimming and cross-training. Endorphins are release during exercise, and this will do a lot to elevate one's mood. When the new mother uses exercise to lose weight, it has the added benefit of helping to reduce stress levels. It is essential that a doctor's advice on the sought before commencing any exercise program.

4. Keep breastfeeding your baby

Breastfeeding provides the infant with the essential nutrients and fats that are helpful in building up immunity and providing the necessary nutrition. At this time, the full effects that breastfeeding has on weight loss can not be truly determined. Even if it doesn't, it is no reason to stop breastfeeding an infant.

5. Get plenty of rest

Going through pregnancy can be taxing on the body, and looking after an infant can raise stress levels even further. When a new mother is able to get 7 hours or more of sleep every night, research has shown that this contributes to helping lose weight from the pregnancy.
