How To Combat The Signs Of Aging

By Scott W. Wright

Just because "aging gracefully" is a nice sounding term, does not mean that it is something easy to achieve. Dealing with the aging process is something you have to do; there is no way around it or time off from it. Still, with some knowledge, there are many ways to help you better manage the process of getting old, and keep yourself as healthy as possible.

Stop worry about numbers when it comes to aging. You can easily get depressed as you see your age increase, your height shrink and your weight fluctuate. You will still need some numbers for medical reasons but you should not weight yourself down every day.

Cultivating solid relationships is essential at all stages of life, but especially when you are aging. Being involved in your community has been shown to help people have a healthier and longer life span. Focus on relationships with people you can confide in to get the most of your social life.

In order to age well, it is vital to follow a balanced diet. Your diet should be filled with whole grains, fiber, fruits and vegetables, and a minimal amount of cholesterol, trans fats and saturated fats. Your body will then be full of vitamins and nutrients that you need to stay healthy.

Always learn new information to keep an active mind. You will get wiser as you age but make sure you also gain knowledge. Many colleges offer reduced tuition to seniors, but challenging your mind can also be as simple as doing the daily crossword.

Learning new things is one of the keys to be healthy in your aging process. You are never too old to learn.

A good way to keep your skin smooth and youthful looking is to avoid powders and foundations. When aging, your skin needs all the hydration it can get. To keep your skin the healthiest as you age, choose makeup that doesn't go directly on your skin such as eye or lip makeup.

As your age increases, your home is thought of a safe haven. When life becomes stressful, you should be able to return to your home and enjoy yourself in a highly personal, comforting environment. Living in your home should be a joy and comfort.

You should have a healthy diet. Stay away from processed sugars and eat a diet that includes plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. When you eat well, you will have plenty of energy to face the day. You will be healthier in body and mind.

Sugar is one of the biggest factors in having a shorter life. Excess sugar can shorten lives and accelerate the aging process. Every animal has its lifespan significantly lowered by sugar.

Be extremely cautious when walking in order to prevent a fall. Falls can cause damage to your body which sometimes cannot be repaired. They are especially dangerous when a senior is involved. To maintain your mental and physical fitness, as well as your balance, try to walk three times a week, 30 minutes each time. Keep your bones strong by lifting weights and getting enough of calcium and Vitamin D. This will reduce your chances of getting a fracture.

To put it in a simple way, you can help yourself prevent heart disease by eating less red meat and more fish. The cholesterol in red meat can clog your arteries. Fish is known to have the opposite affect. So, to help you live a better and longer life, you may want to eat fewer meals containing red meat, and replace those with fish.

To keep a forward-looking attitude in the face of retirement or the 'empty nest' syndrome, pick up again on that hobby you loved years ago. After all, when you no longer have to work or do not have as much time wrapped up in raising a family, you can focus on interests you may have neglected over the years. Hobbies are a great way to get yourself out of your house.

Aging comes with benefits. When you take good care of your body and mind, it's still very possible to live an exciting and healthy life. Look for opportunities in your day to day life to incorporate these ideas, and make your days work for you.
