Chemical Peels for Acne Treatment

By Marlene Ataine

Although for some it is mild with only a few pimples or "zits" occurring every so often, almost every teenager has suffered acne at some point. However acne can be more severe in other teenagers, giving rise to spots called whiteheads, blackheads, and in more severe cases larger red, inflamed spots called cysts. These skin pimples, spots and cysts can change the tone of the skin, leaving a darker tone and severe acne can in some cases leave scarring.

Acne is not dangerous, but can leave skin scars. Oil glands located under the skin connect to the pores (tiny holes) in human skin. The glands are connected to the pores via follicles - small canals. These glands produce Sebum, an oily liquid. Dead skin cells are carried by the sebum through the follicles to the surface of the skin. From the follicle, out of the skin, a small hair grows. When these follicles get blocked, oil accumulates under the skin and pimples develop. Acne is common in teenagers as the hormonal changes during puberty can cause excess oils in the skin. However it is not just teenagers who suffer from acne, adults can also develop acne later on in life, which is called adult acne.

A hypersensitivity or overproduction of androgens (male hormones) is the cause of some adult acne. But an imbalance in both male and female hormones (estrogen) can also cause breakouts. This can happen during a woman's pregnancy, perimenopause, or menopause. Sometimes acne is also encouraged by certain medications, such as corticosteroids, or even cosmetics.

A very good treatment for mild and moderate adult acne is a chemical peel. A chemical peel exfoliates your skin; dirt is cleansed from the skin, and dead skin cells which are clogging the pores are removed. This causes fewer acne pimples and spots to form. Chemical peels may also help to reduce some of the skin discolouration and uneven skin tone caused by acne.

A very cost effective acne treatment is offered by chemical peels. This acne treatment is also very safe. Superficial chemical skin peels are applied to the affected areas to exfoliate and cleanse the top layers of the skin, removing the dead skin cells. A course of six peels is usually recommended, each performed at least one week apart. With this method, you will notice the skin texture improves and the amount of acne breakouts is visibly reduced.

For your chemical peel acne treatment, make sure to approach a credible skin care clinic. Before embarking on treatment with chemical peels for acne, it is important to consult a reputable clinic to obtain advice on how the chemical peel treatment will benefit your skin type.
