Vitamins B6 and B12 for Weight Loss

By Lenai Headley

Vitamins are crucial for optimal function of the body, this is widely accepted in the medical community. Food is a source of many different types of vitamins, and even sunlight can be a source, as some vitamins are synthesized and absorbed by the skin. The B vitamins in particular are important in a number of metabolic processes that occur within our body. B6 and B12 vitamins have been thought to help contribute to weight loss recently, and these are now being considered for this purpose.

Let's take a look at this in a bit closer and assess how exactly they can help.

Vitamin B12

Cobalt is one of the elements in the structure of B!2, so another name for it is cobolamine. This vitamin is highly important with organ systems, most notably the nervous system and the brain need this essential water-soluble vitamin in order to function optimally. Those who do not have enough B12 in their system can suffer from anemia, as this vitamin is crucial in the formation of haemoglobin.

Vitamin B12 is available in a number of animal foods. Vegetarians are more likely to have a lack of B12 in their diet because of this. Exhaustion and lethargy are signs that a person could possibly be deficient in vitamin B12. Patients who receive vitamin B12 injections find it helps raise them to their optimal level of energy, and it can greatly help reduce the feelings of exhaustion that a patient may have.

Weight loss using Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 has been examined quite a bit as of late in the area of supplements for weight loss. However, there does not appear to be any strong evidence from scientific studies that confirms this. In fact, a low vitamin B12 levels can cause weight loss by itself and supplementing the patient with vitamin B12 should help patients regain their lost bodyweight. It is known that vitamin B12 is needed for transforming carbohydrates into usable sugars in the body. It is a matter of debate how much this contributes to weight loss.

It has to be borne in mind that taking vitamin supplements over and above what the body requires can actually be harmful. While no significant harm has been shown by excessive intake vitamin B12 through food, artificially supplementing it through injections may be harmful. The body has a certain capacity for absorbing vitamins and nutrients, and if too much of anything is ingested they no longer are beneficial.

B6

B6 is similar to B12 in that it is water-soluble, and another term for vitamin B6 is pyridoxine. It occurs in a variety of forms most of which are active within the body. Amino acids within protein molecules are broken down by the crucial B6 vitamin, and glucose production within the body is also assisted by it. Fats are also assisted in being broken down by this.

This vitamin is in much of people's diets naturally, as B6 can be found in meat, different nuts, vegetables and grains. The symptoms that someone is deficient in vitamin B6 could include inflammation of the cheeks and or tongue, and skin diseases, among other things.

Weight loss using vitamin B6

At this time, vitamin B6, like B12 for weight loss can not be verified conclusively from studies. However, if one were to look at the functions of vitamin B6, it is evident that it is required to break down food and burn excess fat by stimulating the metabolism of lipids.

The thyroid gland can be overly stimulated by having exceedingly high B6 levels in the body, so this must be carefully considered. By doing so it can actually cause weight loss but this is an unhealthy way to go about doing it.

Synopsis

Both of these vitamins B6, and B12 are incredibly important for the body to function optimally. However their role in weight loss is not backed by any strong evidence. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle including proper exercise and diet are always the best way to have a more healthy body and control weight.
